Show-specific viewing threads (Split from MyAnimeList Partially Back Online article)

As much as some show communities can be toxic and sometimes spoilers are dropped it was interesting discussing shows episode by episode. APFTTU was probably one of the best because it was an original show, so everyone was in the same boat re spoilers.

I don't think we have enough people in this community to make a thread for every episode, maybe threads for just the most popular shows, but that runs into trouble with dubs always behind the subs.

Someone only covered the survival tournament of dragon ball super by the chunks on episodes they were able to watch, and yes, the movie packs were reviewed too, but the staff here can only review the stuff they want or the most requested stuff, as I understand it they don't get paid for that, where other sites do pay for staff who write reviews etc. Thing is though their news is every so often their members ^.^ so news can get through a little faster than other sites. The only real competitor would be ukanimenet, and they're still cleaning up after the former EIC

Not talking about reviews, just a discussion thread where members discuss the events of the episode/series.
Ah... hmmm. I would think we could do that but it would be a bit much for admins and staff to follow. CR has it but it's also a streaming giant in the anime community, they have more to spare in terms of who can watch the forums. The viewing journal is a great thread but it doesn't discuss specific things

We're veering off-topic, but we could always try it with a subset of shows to start with? I trust you guys enough not to start giant flame wars where half a dozen new threads wouldn't bother me much.

It's pretty good, but you do always have to be careful of spoilers. Thus trying to discuss events leaves a load blurred text on the page. Sometimes I'm unsure how spoilery I'm being just by putting the barebones down.

The biggest shows next season will probably be Attack on Titan 3, Overlord 3, FLCL Progressive and maybe Free! Dive to the Future. And the ongoing Steins;Gate 0 is a show where I would certainly like to discuss openly what might be happening. The only problem I see is the split between sub and dub people and people who have played/read the source material accidentally (or on purpose, from a passing troll) spoiling future parts. I don't see flaming being much of problem here, the vast majority seem sensible.

I think with some sensible rules (no spoilers from the source material, etcetera), we could probably manage just fine for at least the shows listed. If anyone does decide to troll, we can delete the spoilers and deny them our hospitality quite easily. But having a place (away from the viewing journal) to talk about the latest episodes of streaming anime sounds like a great idea. :)

Wait... you trust us lot? Even though we have a cult? If a flame war starts all cult members must naturally be on the one side. :p

I can see 2 possible ways to do it.

1 A separate forum from the General Anime one with individual episodes so dubbers can join the same debate, but later on. This would keep General Anime clutter free and keep people together once the dubbers catch up. The downside being a lot of threads for the admins to keep their eyes on.

Or

2. An overall show thread(s) within General Anime with one thread for the subbers and one for dubbers, where needed (which would probably be most of the time if it just the bigger shows). This would prevent dubbers seeing spoilers by accident as they generally are behind, unless it's a situation like Violet Evergarden last season, but would split the community at least until the show is over.

Given that not all shows actually have a dub, it probably wouldn't be an issue to have a thread for sub and a thread for dub would it?

If we're just talking big shows for now then they probably will. Of my list of 5 shows 4 have/will most probably have dubs, I'm not sure about FLCL.

Another solution could be to have one thread, but have everyone use the SPOILER tag and label it Episode 1, etc. But this sort of defeats the purpose in the first place and people being people will get lazy and not bother either because they didn't read the rules or couldn't be bothered.

Spitballing, because this could get messy in a hurry if we didn’t find a good way to organise it, but could a thread per episode work?

That's how MAL do it. Was my first option above, just realised I worded it a bit weirdly. Try again with added words 😄:

[You could set up] a separate forum from the General Anime one with [threads for] individual episodes so dubbers can join the same debate, but later on. This would keep General Anime clutter free and keep people together once the dubbers catch up. The downside being a lot of threads for the admins to keep their eyes on.

Hmm, I heard cartoon networks adult swim block grabbed it up, so it'd probably be like space dandy or something and have a dub very close to the release of a sub

Gotcha. I wasn’t sure how MAL did it, but I see your point now. I’ll need to have a think about how to organise this, then.

Hey all. I'm going to be trialling episode-specific threads starting this week to see how it all works. What shows should be included in the trial? :)
well I imagine the next season's big three will be mentioned quite a bit (AoT, FLCL,Overlord) I really should pick up some of the stuff still running now though, if you start now those would probably be best
