I was not prepared for this much solid gold anime in one post! (I mean OK for me JJK and Suzume are a touch more debatable but still so many amazing shows! Also I have only seen Suzume once so might change my opinion after a second viewing) :)

I haven't seen Suzume yet, but I've always been a sucker for Shinkai's work. I haven't read any reviews for it either, so I'm guessing you think it's a slight drop in quality from his previous films?

I watch Boruto, so my taste is definitely questionable at the best of times 😂 when they're BOGOF, they're hard to resist! I'm looking forward to trying all of them out though - Durarara!! I've already seen and it was more of a nostalgia purchase for me.

I really enjoyed Suzume - as far as Shinkai's works go, Your Name is my GOAT movie, whether live action or animated, and I rank Suzume just a bit behind Your Name, and just ahead of Garden of Words. Weathering With You I did not care for that much, I think I even prefer Agartha (Children Who Chase Lost Voices) over WWY.

Suzume pays homage to the 9.0 Great Tohoku Earthquake and resulting Tsunami that hit Japan back on March 11, 2011, killing 20,000 people and severely damaging the Fukushima nuclear plant. The movie starts out showing a young girl wandering through some of the devastation left behind by the tsunami, and later refers to the date 3/11 in the girl's diary.

The thing with Suzume is that it is deeply steeped in Shinto religious beliefs and lore, so to better understand it, after you see the movie it is good to check out some of the YouTube videos explaining all of what is seen in the movie. Cinema Tokyo has posted 3 explanation videos that really go into a lot of interesting detail.

2024 HAUL - APRIL CHAPTER: BATCH #1

A few more packages arrived this week. The weather wasn't great on one of the days and I had work getting in the way so I took some photos on the day for the first items and then the rest done this morning.

The Bounty Hunter Trilogy - 10.jpg
A Story Written With Water - 07.jpg

The first arrival for the month is another Radiance Films order and these are focused on the Japanese films that arrived in their March line-up.

Starting with The Bounty Hunter Trilogy box set that features three films; Shigehiro Ozawa's 1969 film Bounty Hunter: Killer's Mission (賞金稼ぎ), Eiichi Kudo's 1969 film Bounty Hunter: The Fort of Death (五人の賞金稼ぎ), and Shigehiro Ozawa's 1972 film Bounty Hunter: Eight Men to Kill (賞金首 一瞬八人斬り). This box set was selling pretty fast than anyone had been anticipating so I got my copy ordered sooner than later. I suppose part of the reason is because the main actor of these films Tomisaburo Wakayama is also the same lead star in the Lone Wolf and Cub adaptations (which I never managed to get on Blu-ray because Criterion's release was too expensive and is out of print).

Also arrived was Kiju Yoshida's 1965 film A Story Written With Water (水で書かれた物語), a single pressing release which means once this sells out it will no longer be reprinted. Some of you may recognise the director's name as Arrow Academy once released a box set of his films called Love + Anarchism in 2015 (and then re-released in 2021 under the Arrow Video name).

I plan to get more of the recent Radiance Films titles and a few pre-ordered as it's clear that demand is higher than ever!

Burst Angel - 07.jpg

Next we have an MVM Entertainment release thanks to their Deal of the Week offer with the collector's edition Blu-ray release of Burst Angel, Gonzo's 2004 series. Funimation released this on Blu-ray back when they used to do slipboxes with two slim amaray cases but in recent years MVM finally re-released it. You can view more photos & specs on my blog.

The Inspector Wears Skirts II - 5.jpg
River 1.jpg

Next we have our Terracotta Store haul featuring two more recent releases.

First up I want to talk about Wellson Chin Sing-Wai's 1989 film The Inspector Wears Skirts II (神勇飛虎霸王花) which for some reason is going out of print on its first print edition which is very surprising. Then again I mainly pre-order 88 Films' titles and I didn't think this one of all releases would sell as soon as it did. Terracotta were upfront on what edition they have so I went for their listing to secure a copy.

Next we have Junta Yamaguchi's 2023 film River (リバー、流れないでよ), which is by the same team behind the recent film Beyond the Infinite Two Minutes. As I wanted to get free shipping I went for this film since I heard it was pretty good.
