Animeuknews podcast launches

After much testing and some delays, we finally have got our first podcast underway. We decide to try out a couple of things with this pilot cast and decide on our first topic of discussion; Studio Ghibli. And we ask the question " Can Studio Ghibli survive without Hayao Miyazaki or Isao Takahata?"

You can find the first podcast, and future episodes over on the Nakama Britannica blog
Please feel free to leave any feedback on this here, and before you mention it, we know the news is a little out of date, we had this recorded a little bit ago.

Man that file is big! I'm going to give it a listen now, or when it finally downloads, I'll let you know what I think in a few hours time

EDIT: Who was in the podcast again? Professor Irony is the only guy I recognise.

Urgh, I know, big file. I have so many compressors and when I get it small, something else makes it big again. Hate. My. Life.

At least it isn't a WAV, the size of that would be uncomprehendable

I'm about 75 minutes into it and it's quite good so far, there is some phasing in places but it's not that big of a deal, the audio quality is good as well

Great topic on what will happen with Ghibli in later years.

But did't like how you bashed Tales from Earthsea and Porco Rosso. Yes I know everyone has different opinions, but I did't think you argued well why you you didn't enjoy it that much than other films.

Im coming up to 1h in the pod now, and theres a few films here that you mention that you haven't seen or have seen a long time ago and can't remember it. Thats all ok If you haven't seen all of the films or haven't seen them for a long time and can't remember them well. But if you don't remember it or haven't seen it I can't agree on what you say because it guessing.

I agree Porco Rosso is slightly boring but it's a fantastic watch and has a great story. Maybe because it wasn't intended to be a feature film at first.

Earthsea, I enjoyed it first time I saw it but I agree with some of the arguments. Even tho I haven't read the books so I cant really tell what part of the story from the books its from.
And I think Goro's second movie has done better so there is hope.

I know how podcasts are, as I do them myself, and to be put on the spot or not organised yourself of the history of the topic, it's just not good.

Enjoyed the arguments from all 3 of you and your opinions.

Keep them coming.

P.S Watch all the Ghibli films! I have them all and there all great in there own way, you may change your mind on whats your least favourite, there is NO boring Ghibli film.
- And for the record mine my least story driven film was Howl's Moving Castle. That was a awesome film to look at but story was soooo...slow. (I know I will have some hate for saying that)

I need to get it down to 30mb for Podbean, haha. If people really want it smaller, I'll have another go, but otherwise I'll just do it for future ones.

What did you try?
Various "convert x to x" things.

Isn't it super easy to get your podcast on iTunes? Lots of **** ones seem to have managed it, so I have faith in you superior types.

For the first actual podcast episode, it was decent. it didn't interest me much but its good to listen to a anime uk podcast.

Instead of talking mainly about 1 subject, maybe you could talk about animes you,ve watched recently, Animes that are soon to be released on DVD, review a certain anime etc.

Also, and don't take this the wrong way but, use some humor. I only listen to 2 podcast websites which are Film Junk and Spill. There podcasts are useally funny because they usually make fun of things rather then just review them.

Well i hope this feedback is useful, this is just my opinion anyway. But well done for being the first UK anime website to do a podcast!

I haven't gave it a listen yet, but will do so on way to work and report back. I would recomend trying to set up an RSS feed for it, even if you don't get it on itunes just to make it simpler. My Ipod can't cope with MP3 podcasts, it thinks they are music which causes issues.

I wouldn't put to much focus on the news as almost every anime podcast covers news, and I get tired of listening to same 'news' over and over again. The 'debate' style would be good as neither of the other to UK podcast I know of really do that at the moment.

I haven't had the chance to listen yet, but because I have some podcasting experience I can offer a few words of guidance.

Yup, it's a piece of the proverbial, you just go into the store, click 'submit podcast' and enter your feed. They check it (to make sure it's not porn or whatever) and it shows up after a few days. I've done it twice and it's dead simple. (I've dealt with video content but it's exactly the same for audio casts)

It asked me to do something with an RSS feed and I got confused.

The Nakama Brittanica blog page, already has a RSS feed. Or a podcast specific blog can be started with blogger/wordpress etc. It won't currently work as a podcast that you subscribe to in iTunes (even manually) because the file is hosted on mediafire. So before it can be submitted, You need to move it somewhere else, and then link the post to the file. Then if the feed is added to itunes (other podcast programmes are available !) it will download the episode. If you need help you can PM or email me and I will help where I can.

I have used Podbean for a number of years and have found it to be more than adequate for what I need, although you need a paid account to get the most of it.

I'm looking forward to checking out the first show!

I listened to a fair bit of your discussion while I was busy doing whatever I was doing and it was good, you get the thumbs up from me. I can't say I listened to it all because a hour and a half is pretty long but what I heard was definitely good, you all seem like such nice likeable people!

Thank you :)

We have been kicking about the idea of dividing it up into sections as well, so hopefully we'll get something worked out for future episodes.

Oh, yeah, forgot about this.

Use something like Exact Audio Copy or LameXP, and encode it to MP3 using... V2 would be good, I suppose.

Or you could do AAC and encode it to 64/128kbps and have the same quality as a higher sized mp3.

I have now listened to all of the podcast. The news section wasn't actually that bad, it was quite short and had a bit of an opinion mixed in, was worried it was going to be ' We shall now read from the headlines of the Anime News Network page'.

The discusion on Ghibli, it gave me a lot of things to think about. I like Porco Rosco, maybe because I am old :D.

Marco is just a grumpy old git/Middle age man. I am never sure if he has actually somehow magicaly turned into a pig because of his attitude, or if he just drawn as a pig because its shorthand for the way he acts.

The scene with the spirits of dead pilots always gives me the shivers.

I don't know if you all introduced yourself at the start (if you did I missed it), If you do another one it would be nice to know a little more about the hosts.

Listened to the first show and have to say, you're off to a great start. I think lengthwise it's about right 90 mins-ish will suit most people. Personally I'm a podcast junkie and can cope with epic-length shows (in fact for my favourite podcasts, I welcome it) but a lot of people would probably be put off by 2hour plus shows. I also think the format of having a set topic is really smart. This should help it to appeal beyond the aukn community. I wonder if the topics will just be random, or if they will be relevant to the time they are released? -For example have a horror episode for halloween, or a madhouse show when redline is released for example. Having guests is something you could look into too.

One final point- as others have picked up on, it'd really be good if you introduced yourselves. Especially as you talk about doing so for about 10 minutes- and then don't do it. You big teases. :p

Anyway, sterling work, I look forward to hearing more.
