Daily Mail: Ban this sick filth!

Came across this article on Daily Mail today:

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/art...r-convicted-possessing-child-pornography.html

In Sweden, a comic translator is in court due to the police seizing his 'child pornography' collection which consisted of 'indecent' manga images.

My favourite quote taken from the article is: 'Japan’s manga cartoons, which are intended for adults, frequently feature violent and explicit sex, in which innocent young girls falling prey to demonic men.' - which we all know is a sweeping generalisation of the perceived attitude towards manga.

Apart from the quality of the source where the article is taken from: What are your views about this?

Does anyone actually have a copy of the original "ban this sick filth" article? I've never been able to actually find it.

Wasn't there a respectable dictionary that published a similar skewed definition of anime?

I think its the same story. This part of the article caught my attention

On Tuesday, Björn Sellström, a criminal inspector of Sweden's National Bureau of Investigation's child pornography unit, wrote in the Svenska Dagbladet newspaper that the images should not be considered pornography, noting that he was "doubtful of how a conviction would benefit those children who are actually suffering from real abuse which is being documented."

Couldn't get over this part from the dailymail - 'Japan’s manga cartoons, which are intended for adults, frequently feature violent and explicit sex, in which innocent young girls falling prey to demonic men. They are describing Hentai, most anime (manga cartoons  ) does not involve this, what was their source material Legend of Overfiend?????

Idiots even used a picture of Kiddy Grade, have they ever watched the anime has nothing to do with the article. If i had the UK rights for the show i would be kicking off at the mail.

Dear Daily Mail,
I own around 150 manga volumes in my collection and not a single one of them contains any sex at all. In fact, the majority of them are more tame than the average western tv show or film.

Sincerely,
Someone who wants you to get your ******* facts straight.
(Also, I wonder how MVM would feel about the image of Kiddy Grade being used...)

Honestly though, I agree that more time and effort should be put in place to y'know...track down real paedophiles and to safeguard real children.

What began as a legend soon became a unique selling point.

Funnily enough, when I saw the thread title, I fully expected the words, "Overfiend rereleased on dvd".

Can't say I'm all that disappointed that it isn't the case.

Dear Daily Mail,
Earlier today I read an article on your website written by Richard Orange regarding a Swedish man who is fighting a fine for apparently possessing manga material which has been deemed to contain child pornography. While I understand that there are debates worldwide regarding any potential difference between pornographic material between real people and other representations (such as drawings), there is one statement in the article that I, as a deep enthusiast of Japanese anime and manga, am deeply offended by:
"Japan's manga cartoons, which are intended for adults, frequently feature violent and explicit sex, in which innocent young girls falling prey to demonic men."

I do not think there is a single sentence that was uttered on this day that is more wrong (even taking into account discussions in the House of Commons). Manga is a medium with titles for all ages - from young children to mature adults with titles that span every genre and target age group imaginable. A vast majority of manga is not pornographic in any way, shape or form. I have been an avid collector of manga since my teens and I have amassed over 150 volumes of material - and none of them, despite the various genres I collect, contain any pornographic material (be it between adults or otherwise). I can honestly say that I have been exposed to more scenes of violent or sexual natures through western properties, such a TV shows and films, then I have during my time being an anime and manga fan. The way you describe anime and manga is as if it is all repulsive trash - which is the opposite of the truth. For example, Isao Takahata's film Grave of the Fireflies is known by famous film critic Roger Ebert as being one of the most powerful anti-war films in the history of cinema, while Studio Ghibli has even adapted the English classics The Borrowers (Known here as Arriety) and Howl's Moving Castle into anime films, as well as making others which have been of huge inspiration to the American Pixar studio. In fact, it is because of the deep morals from some of the works in this vast medium that I have been able to get through some incredibly times in my life and it is through them that I have been moulded into the caring, loyal and good person I am today, so to say that I am deeply sickened by the statement is this article is a gross understatement.

My 77 year old Grandfather takes every word your newspaper publishes as absolute truth, so how do you think I am feeling right now wondering if at any moment, will my Grandfather come knocking on my front door accusing me of being a pervert?! This small lie has enough venom in it to potentially destroy my relationship with my Grandfather - who for 49 years was the husband of the woman who would later be my Grandmother and Godmother, who was like a second mother to me, before her sudden death in 2009. So on behalf of myself and anime fans across the country who fear this article being misread by the masses could lead them to being wrongly labelled as perverts and their hobbies as perverted by unknowing readers of your newspaper, I would like to kindly demand that the offending paragraph be removed from the article and a noticeable formal apology to be placed in your newspaper.

The paragraph in incredibly misleading, but it also has little to do with the article in itself. I also suggest that you have a word with your writers about doing their research properly. The Daily Mail is one of the country's biggest newspapers and has an incredibly larger reader base, thus a heavy influence on the opinions of its readers, so is it wrong to expect better quality controls before their articles go to print (or in this case, go live)? I don't think it is too much to ask at all.

Yours Sincerely,
Josh A. Stevens

If you couldn't guess, I'm pissed off.

Since when did the media let facts get in the way of stories of people doing shocking and appalling things for their readers to be shocked and appalled by?

I've laid out my position on the legal aspects of lolicon/more depraved hentai a dozen times before - The law is there to protect people and to seek justice for those who have been harmed by others. If there has been no victim then then there has been no crime, any more than there has been a crime in any work of fiction which includes a scene of rape or murder (or even theft).

I look forward to the day when uncut Overfiend is a free DVD give away in the Mail. The time will come. While I can only admire Josh's effort to write and try to explain, I can't see the staff of the Mail as people to be reasoned with and made to understand, only as an enemy to be fought and destroyed. Morality is already on its knees, all we need to do is give it a swift kick in the head and it won't be getting back up. Then I shall laugh maniacally and sustain myself with the delicious tears of its readers for the rest of eternity.

Yeah, I'm with that guy. Of course, moral revulsion will always trump the words of someone who actually knows what they're talking about, as well as plain common sense. It's more popular with the masses, for one thing.

I also find it interesting that they used an image from Kiddy Grade...which was rereleased on Monday.

I also sent it as a forward with a covering note to AnimeNewsNetwork and MVM, as well as posting a link to the article on the Facebook pages for Crunchyroll and MyM Magazine.

Who said anything about going it alone? =3

Just before Pokemon got its UK release The Daily Fail ran an article on it. I recall one of the sentences reading: 'The monsters try to kill each other with ray guns'.

So finding a written article like this is hardly surprising.

But perhaps that's why the franchise got so popular to begin with.
