<a href="http://nymag.com/daily/entertainment/2007/08/kanye_west_listening_party.html">Having attended</a> the listening party for Kanye West's latest hip-hop album, <a href="http://nymag.com/daily/entertainment/2007/08/kanye_west_listening_party.html">NYmag</a> seem all too happy to point out that the music was "inexplicably" complimented by "hyperviolent Korean cinema and anime porn".
<a href="http://www.animeuknews.net/news/1440/kanye-west-recreates-akira-in-his-latest-music-video">As we reported back in July</a>, West's "<a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cZd1Js0QaOI">Stronger</a>" music video was heavily inspired by the classic anime movie <em>Akira</em> and it's probably fair to assume that this new album will contain a number of references to Eastern pop culture. Of course, given Kanye West is one of the most popular musical artists in the world right now, his efforts will no doubt help to introduce anime to a whole new generation of fans.

On a related note, NYmag have also published a <a href="http://nymag.com/daily/entertainment/2007/08/comics_undertown.html">good quality preview of TokyoPop's "global manga"</a> comic 'Undertown'.

What an idiotic website NY Entertainment is. They made themselves look even more stupid by saying it was Korean, then contradict themselves by saying anime after, obviously not having a clue about what it actually is.

Fail.

On the other side of things, it did make me laugh.

EDIT: Hah, forgot to mention the ironic side of things where they show manga in another topic. Funny stuff.

I think it means there were two different things showing: 1) violent Korean movies and 2) anime porn.

That's how I read it at least.

It just cements my view of what a monumentally immense buffoon Kanye West really is. Seeing him being described as 'intriguing' and likened to a 'rock star' suggests that the cultural evolution of the human race is backing up and reversing into a blind alley of crapness.

Sorry guys, even if he likes anime I still can't find it in myself to respect, sorry, 'respec', him at all!

Must admit, I don't mind Kanye. I have his first album and it's alright.

The CD cover-art for his new album is also damn cool (apparently he brought in a famous Japanese superflat artist; superflat is awesome):

While Kanye's music seems to have deviated from when he started out, his first album was fantastic. He's moving in a direction i don't like.

But to be fair he isn't the first artist to use anime/eastern culture. Just look at Daft Punk. Like him or not i welcome this move.

Am I missing something in the way this article comes across?

What I made from it was a complete lack of understanding about the man himself, and what he thinks. The headline of the article made me just think the person who wrote it is just looking for some kind of attention, or to say something controversial for the sake of being controversial.

From seeing the man present the "Friday Night Project" a couple of weeks back, what man I saw was an overworked, but genuine and honest man, who cares a lot for his work. I hadn't heard a lot about him before, other than that he was a rapper (and had released "Stronger"), but his image doesn't seem anything like the sterotypical gangster ideology.

It's beyond me how someone can write such an article without getting their facts straight, or actually having any clue what they're on about. It seems like one of those gossip magazine articles really.

EDIT: On a side not, I think that CD art looks absolutely superb!

Kanye West's music doesn't sound like my sort of thing but if I see this Album going cheep at some point in the future I may check out out of interest. It will be interesting to see what he does in his videos although if he just keeps on doing parodies of existing anime and doing them as badly as his parody of Akira then if I ever meet him i'll ask why he doesn't become a comedian instead
