Yeah... tbh, I thought watching 0079 series was kind of tedious and the Movies just give you all you need to start enjoying the later, better series.

If you're a wee bit of a retro fan, try Bubblegum Crisis, Macross: Lovers Again or a bit of Raxephon, even! I like the mecha in Ryu Knight, myself.
