Just a thought...

Good afternoon chaps, I know I'm an infrequent poster here but I'd just like to share an idea:
I noticed some posts in the user feedback forum about how the Anime section has been bereft of activity lately, and that any threads discussing specific series seem to die out quickly, because people here are rarely watching the same shows at the same time. Might I suggest a communal viewing experience?

There's no Anime on TV currently but there are now several legit streaming websites, so I'd suggest either:
http://www.crunchyroll.com/
Or
http://www.funimation.com/
We could then choose a title from one of these sites, watch one or two episodes a week (at agreed times) and voila group discussion is born!

So, any thoughts? Or do I need to lurk more? :p

That's just crazy talk! Planning? Coordination? And free for everyone?

Actually I think it's a cool idea; if you pick something that's already out (in R1) too those who don't tend to watch online can even sync up their viewing too with those on the video sites. Might get a few people to check out a series they had overlooked as well.

Yeah but all at the same time??? what??
what if one of us is in the bathroom and it hits 3pm....and everyones meant to watch XYZ....that person won't contribute in the thread....and then he'll feel alone!

lol just joking around, it sounds like a plan atleast....although i don't think it'll be as easy as general program talk....if the shows where on tv at 7pm every other night then sure....but as its online i don't think it'd work as well.

isn't most of that region locked?

The Funimation website is 100% locked to the USA, but Crunchyroll is not. As I mentioned before you just need to check each title on Crunchyroll to see what countries can view a series.

Funny, I can watch everything on the Funimation site from here in the UK.

Yup, just checked and it all still works. I particularly recommend the Shikabane Hime series. Although you can preview all the shows that Manga have licenced for UK release if you want to try before you buy. Also titles like Galaxy Railways which have never been released here can be seen. Just noticed that Origin Spirits Of The Past is up there in its dubbed entirety!

Crunchyroll are about 40/60 at the moment. We can watch about 40% of their stuff in the UK, especially the new Gonzo stuff like Linebarrels of Iron and The Tower of Druaga, TV Tokyo stuff like Naruto and Gintama, some Pony Canyon stuff like Steel Angel Kurumi. But all of the old ADV stuff like Last Exile and Chrono Crusade is region locked.

Crunchroll's latest stuff is usually subscription only for the first week, then free to all afterwards at lower resolutions.

That list is kept pretty current.

Remember it's Global Shinkai day tomorrow! Free movies on Crunchyroll.

I thought everyone new about the Funi website, I've posted a few times that I have watched some eps on there.

Its great, I usually watch an ep or 2 and decide if I think its worthy of a purchase, thus why I can't wait for Mushi-shi boxset and Darker than Black to come out :D

The Funimation website is region-free (or it's at least available to the UK and Ireland as well as the US).
See for yourself:
http://www.funimation.com/video/

Oh, well that seems to be a new revelation. I'm certain when it was first set up it was USA only.

EDIT: Yeah, I didn't realise they had this new part of the website where you can stream stuff. I meant the downloads, which still are locked to people in the USA, and not free.

In fact, it seems odd that the paid downloads still exist, I doubt they're really any better quality than the stream (which looks like amazing quality EDIT: actually pretty average quality, but certainly as good as any download I've seen from the BBC/4oD, etc), though they might have the watermark non-hardcoded onto the video.
